While everyone else was too nervous to be recorded, one brave Israeli mother agreed to take us behind the scenes of her massive, loving family Seder.
Episode 11

In addition to understanding the laws of Passover (Pesach), I wanted to talk to someone who is actually in the trenches getting ready for the holiday. After all, in Israel, that’s the main conversation topic in the weeks leading up to Pesach.
No one is really talking about the story of the Exodus, or how they’re planning to read the Haggadah this year. The only things people care about before the holiday are cleaning, cooking, making sure they’ve got everything they need to survive it, and—of course—what to do with the kids during a two-week school vacation.
To get an authentic perspective, I interviewed Dorit Levi from Sderot, who manages the administration at the local Resilience Center (Merkaz Chosen). Together with her husband, Dorit hosts their entire family for the Seder night. In our conversation, Dorit shares how they start calculating their Chametz stocks weeks in advance, the energy of decluttering the house, and how she manages to get the entire kitchen kosher in time. She also shares incredible, practical tips on how to survive the holiday preparation without fighting with your family, and a winning recipe for Charoset at the very end!
This is a great episode for anyone who wants to better understand the true Israeli mentality—and what things look like from the practical, hard-working, yet deeply loving side of the holiday.
🔍 Here is what you’ll find in this episode:
- The Behind-the-Scenes Journey: Why I struggled to find someone willing to be recorded, and how Dorit courageously said yes to an unscripted interview.
- The Modern Israeli Mindset: A fascinating look into the cultural mentality of a secular Israeli family preparing for a major traditional event.
- Real, Fast-Paced Hebrew: An incredible opportunity to train your ears on everyday Israeli speech, local slang, and natural conversational speed.
- The Sderot Resilience Reality: A peek into Dorit’s work at Merkaz Chosen and how complex security realities and holiday traditions live side by side.
- The Sweet Reward: Stick around until the very end of the conversation for Dorit’s winning, secret family recipe for the perfect Charoset.
🌟The Israeli Reality: 3 Things You Only Hear Before Passover
Textbooks will teach you words like Matzah or Haggadah. But this interview exposes you to the real cultural phenomena and logistical chaos that Israelis face in the weeks leading up to the holiday:
The “Le’Mesira” (Giveaway) WhatsApp Craze: Dorit talks about using the pre-Passover cleaning as an energetic reset to declutter the house. In Israel, neighborhood WhatsApp groups dedicated exclusively to “לִמְסִירָה בִּלְבַד” (for giveaway only) explode with activity during this time. It’s a beautiful showcase of Israeli community solidarity where everyone passes furniture, clothes, and appliances from hand to hand so that everyone benefits (“כֻּלָּם יוֹצְאִים נִשְׂכָּרִים”).
The “Who’s Coming?” Grocery War: Dorit explains that weeks before the holiday, she has to act like a military logistics officer. She builds a massive menu and calculates grocery shopping based on exactly which children, in-laws, and extended family members are arriving—often reaching up to 16 guests! In Israel, supermarket aisles during this period are packed with people buying food in industrial quantities to survive the long holiday weekend.
“Eating in the Garden” (לֶאֱכֹל בַּגִּינָּה): This is one of the funniest and most relatable Israeli holiday paradoxes mentioned in the interview. Once Dorit deep-cleans her kitchen and makes it completely Kosher for Passover, ordinary bread (Chametz) is strictly banned inside the house. The solution? For the last few days before the holiday, the family is forced to eat their leftover bread and pasta outside in the garden or on the balcony!
