In this episode of Simply Hebrew, I introduce a new recurring segment in the podcast: “News in Hebrew” — short, unusual, and sometimes surprising stories from around the world, told in natural Hebrew for learners.
The idea is not to focus on heavy politics or breaking news, but on interesting human stories — the kind that make you laugh, think, or say: wait… is this real?
In this episode, we travel from France to England and then to Israel, with three completely different stories:
- a luxury fashion controversy
- a massive cheese heist
- and a creative response to online harassment
Let’s get into it.
When Fashion Gets Weird: The Half Jean Trend
We start in the world of luxury fashion with a French brand called Coperni.
Recently, the brand released a very unusual product: a pair of jeans where one leg is full-length and the other is cut short above the thigh. In other words, one leg is fully covered, while the other is completely exposed.
The price? Around $440 per pair.
On their website, Coperni described the design as:
“a bold departure from tradition” and “meant to break boundaries”
As expected, the internet had opinions.
Many users mocked the design, with comments like:
- “This is the dumbest thing I’ve seen since ripped jeans became a trend.”
- “At least amputees finally have a custom-fit option.”
Despite the criticism, not everyone laughed.
A fashion influencer with millions of followers on TikTok actually showcased the jeans in a video, enthusiastically presenting them as a futuristic fashion statement. Even her partner, who appeared in the video, was confused and asked the obvious question:
“Where is the other leg?”
Later in the video, she even tries them on — and struggles a bit with the fit, but continues to defend the concept as innovative and expressive.
Interestingly, despite the online backlash, the product completely sold out.
It raises a familiar question in modern fashion:
Does criticism online actually hurt brands — or does it sometimes make them even more popular?
The Great Cheese Heist: 22 Tons Gone Missing
From fashion we move to something very different: cheese.
In the UK, a massive theft shocked the food industry — around 22 tons of premium cheddar cheese were stolen from a high-end supplier in London.
This wasn’t a simple robbery. It was a carefully planned scam.
The cheese involved was not ordinary cheddar. It was a high-quality artisanal variety known as Clothbound Cheddar, traditionally wrapped in cloth and aged in special conditions, giving it a deep, rich flavor and a much higher price.
To understand the scale:
We’re talking about roughly 950 large cheese wheels, worth nearly $400,000.
So how did the thieves do it?
They didn’t break in at night. Instead, one person pretended to represent a large French company interested in buying the cheese. He built trust with the supplier, convinced them to ship the goods without upfront payment, and then disappeared with the entire shipment.
Only later did the company realize they had been victims of a scam.
Even famous chef Jamie Oliver commented on the case, calling it:
“a real shame for the cheese world”
Despite the financial loss, the supplier decided to compensate the original producers and continue supporting artisanal cheese makers.
And the big question remains:
Where did 950 wheels of stolen cheese actually go?
Fighting Online Harassment in a Very Unusual Way
The final story takes us to Israel, and it deals with a much more serious topic: online harassment and sexual messages sent through social media.
While this is unfortunately a common issue, some women in Israel have found a very creative way to respond.
Instead of ignoring or blocking the harassers, they do something unexpected:
they send screenshots of the messages directly to the offender’s parents — sometimes even to their partners or family members.
One woman, Maya-Lee Levi (24), explained in an interview that many men behave aggressively online because they feel anonymous and protected.
Her personal story started after her phone number was leaked following a conflict with a social media influencer. She began receiving abusive messages, and at one point decided to record a phone call and send it directly to the sender’s father.
The reaction was immediate: the father apologized and promised to handle the situation. The harassment stopped shortly after.
Other women shared similar experiences:
- One sent screenshots to the harasser’s mother and wife
- Another tracked down the mother on Facebook and sent her a message
- Others reported that once families were informed, the behavior stopped quickly
A clinical psychologist interviewed in the article explained that this approach can be effective because it removes the “shield” of anonymity. When behavior becomes visible to family or close social circles, it creates immediate social consequences.
Beyond the specific method, the broader message is clear:
online behavior is not invisible, and actions in digital spaces still have real-world consequences.
