Stories from Israelis traveling after the army
Episode 4
Like the previous episode about falafel in Israel, this episode of Pashut Ivrit, a Hebrew learning podcast for intermediate learners, was also a big undertaking.
I took on the challenge of writing a full script and editing interviews with three different people:
- The manager of a well-known outdoor gear store in Israel
- The director of an Israeli hostel in Mexico
- An Israeli couple traveling through South America
And I did all of this from my small home office in Spain.
What I really enjoyed about creating this episode was how nostalgic it felt. It brought back memories from my time in the army and the kibbutz — some of which even made their way into the episode itself.
I even managed to find an original audio clip from almost 20 years ago, when my friends recorded one of their “Spanish language competitions.”
For me, this is one of the most meaningful parts of creating a Hebrew listening practice podcast — connecting language learning with real Israeli life, memories, and culture.
My friends loved the episode, and so did a few listeners from Israel. I was thrilled.
But just a few days after releasing it, I received my first listener message.
That moment was exciting in itself — it meant someone out there (other than my mom!) was actually listening to this Hebrew podcast for learners.
The listener, who had recently made aliyah from Argentina, told me that the episode was too difficult for him.
The Hebrew was too fast, the background music made it hard to understand, and my pronunciation wasn’t always clear.
It wasn’t easy to hear, but deep down I knew he was right.
I realized I needed to create episodes that are more accessible to my real audience — people who are learning Hebrew, not people who already speak it fluently.
From that moment, I decided to adjust my style and think about that listener every time I create a new episode.

“post-army trip”
This is a very common Israeli cultural concept
In Israel, many young people travel for several months (sometimes a year) after finishing military service. The most popular destinations are:
- South America
- India
- Southeast Asia
This is not just a vacation — it is often seen as a life transition period.
Cultural insight: why South America?
One of the main topics in this episode is why so many Israelis choose South America after the army.
Some reasons mentioned in the episode:
- Spanish is relatively easy for Israelis to pick up
- Many cheap travel routes (especially in the 2000s)
- Strong Israeli travel culture after military service
- Childhood exposure to Latin American culture in Israel
👉 This is a unique mix of language, culture, and tradition that shaped an entire generation of Israeli travelers.
Hebrew expression: “עָלִיתִי לָאָרֶץ” (aliyah)
The listener had recently made aliyah from Argentina.
👉 “לַעֲשׂוֹת עֲלִיָּה” = to immigrate to Israel (especially Jews moving to Israel)
He told me that the episode was too difficult for him.
